Shark gives 'Maddog' the ride - and fright - of his life

John 'Maddog' Morgan on Monday morning after being dragged 50 metres by a shark on Sunday.

Byron Bay surfing industry identity, John 'Maddog' Morgan was taken for the ride of his life on Sunday, but he didn't enjoy it one bit.

Surfing on a stand-up board at Clarks Beach, Mr Morgan was dragged backwards "like a jet ski" for 50 metres by a three-metre shark which apparently had got caught up in his leg rope.

He said there was a massive swirling under his board before it took off backwards. He was able to lay face-down on the board facing the rear of the craft and said he was lucky he didn't fall off.

The water was very dirty and he couldn't tell what sort of a shark it was.

When the shark broke free, Mr Morgan paddled straight to the beach where he informed authorities of the incident before going to Byron Bay Hospital to be treated for shock.

While admitting to being shaken by the incident, he said it wouldn't stop him going back into the water.
